Mako Shark & Blue Shark Expedition // April 5th - 9th 2023 // Cabo, Baja

The fastest fish in the ocean, and arguably the most beautiful shark in the ocean, Makos Sharks and Blue sharks respectively are incredibly enigmatic and for shark lovers, some of the most rewarding shark encounters of any species. To photograph them in the warm crystal blue waters off Baja California Sur is a dream for any shark or photography addict.

Pelagic sharks such as Blues and Makos are generally found 60-100 miles off shore meaning it is logistically very hard and dangerous to find them. Uniquely to the Baja penisula, deep ocean trenches come much closer in to shore meaning that we can usually find these incredible hunters 20-40 miles off shore. With a full day of 8-10 hours on the open ocean we can generally expect to find multiple sharks and spend lots of time in the water with them.

I have been photographing sharks (and specifically pelagic sharks) for many years around the world and with small groups and an excellent team of staff always focussed on safety this is by far the most reliable, most comfortable and most productive place to see these animals.

Accommodation

Hotel Tessoro is a 4 star hotel right on the marina in Cabo. It is a perfect location for us as it is 3 minutes for us to walk to the boat. This means that less distance to carry equipment, and less time to walk giving us more aptitude for time on the water. Cabo can be very expensive so we have been lucky to find reasonably priced accommodation that also boasts amazing views and great amenities. Prices are based on two people sharing a room with two queen sized beds. If anyone is traveling alone and wants their own room, a single supplement can be organized.

Operation

My team in Cabo are focussed on safety and comfortability. Big powerful boats with shade allow us to stay safely offshore in the sun, comfortably for long periods of time. The team are incredibly experienced in the waters of Baja with all the animals it has to offer so their experience is invaluable in finding the sharks. As locals, they are also very used to solving any other issues that we as a team or individually may have. Bottom line is, we are in very good hands.

Wildlife

Obviously we are primarily here for Mako Sharks and Blue Sharks but we often come across other species of sharks including Silky Sharks and Smooth Hammerheads which are a welcome encouter. Other species of game fish are regularly sighted such as Mahi Mahi, Marlin and Tuna as well as various species of cetaceans such as Humpbacks, Minke Whales, Blue Whales, Dolphins and Orca.

Orca

Different pods of Orca frequent the waters of Baja and they can be seen around Cabo a couple of times a month. Sharks can be very shy when there are Orca in the area as they can end up as prey. IF we have reports or sightings Orca in the area then we generally turn our attention to the Orca to swim with them instead.

Itinerary

  • April 5th // Arrive in Cabo San Lucas and check into the Hotel Tessoro. Looking over the marina and 3 minutes from the boat. Meet everyone, get some food and prepare for the next day with briefings and Q&A’s

  • April 6th // After breakfast at the hotel, we set out early for our first day. Once we arrive to the edge of the deep ocean trenches we start looking for sharks. We will spend 8-10 hours on / in the water. Coming back to the hotel around sunset we can grab a drink and food together or separately depending on preference.

  • April 7th // Second ocean day means that everyone is comfortable and well rehearsed. Another 8-10 hours off shore with the sharks and then back to the hotel to rest, shower, eat and repeat.

  • April 8th // Third full day on the water, returning to land at sunset everyone is usually very tired and very happy. That evening we can all hang out, talk about the previous days events, eat drink and be merry.

  • April 9th // For those who fly later in the evening a morning ocean session can be organized, as we are not using scuba flying doesn’t incur a risk. For those who are tired, a day by the pool before you fly is usually a welcome treat.
